Search for assets at the local level
Searching Locally is the best place to start an asset search. An effective search typically starts at the county or city level, depending on where the data was filed. The resources listed below are often used by debt collection attorneys in their search for debtors’ assets.
- Filings under the Uniform Commercial Code
- Real-estate records
- Information on automobiles
- Court documents
- Records of divorce procedures
- Probate documents
- A history of employment
- Business records
Any information uncovered should be forwarded to the courthouse where the judgement was obtained. When you win a judgement, recovery of money from a debt owed to you is often accomplished through a writ of garnishment against a person’s salary.
