Myths #8 – You Can Go To Jail Over A Debt

Debtors’ Prisons left scene ages ago.  Under almost all situations, you will not go to jail over a debt.

In fact, it is illegal for a debt collector to threaten you with being arrested for a debt.

There are a few exceptions.

  1. In some states, you can be arrested for certain types of debt, like child support.
  2. In some states, you can be arreseted for failing to appear in court for a debt collection related hearing.
